The Hand of Ethelberta is a novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1876. At the beginning of the book, we are told that Ethelberta was raised in humble circumstances but, through her work as a governess, married well at the age of eighteen. Her husband died two weeks after the wedding and, now twenty-one, Ethelberta lives with her mother-in-law, Lady Petherwin. In the three years that have elapsed since the deaths of both her husband and father-in-law, Ethelberta has been treated to foreign travel and further privilege by her benefactress, but restricted from seeing her poor family. The events of the story concern Ethelberta's career as a famous poetess and storyteller as she struggles to support her family and conceal her secret—that her father is a butler. Beautiful, clever, and rational, she easily attracts four very persistent suitors (Mr. Julian, Mr. Neigh, Mr. Ladywell, and Lord Mountclere), but is reluctant to give her much-coveted hand.

One of Hardy's best, in my opinion, though lesser known. Ethelberta is a manipulator, but for the purpose of supporting her extended family. We follow her exploits in wooing three men, turning her back on the one she really loves to marry the richest and oldest of them. This is Hardy's theme of rich and poor in relation at its best. This time, though, the heroine is of poor origin but adopted into a wealthy family by an early and short-lived first marriage, so she bridges the chasm perhaps as no other of Hardy's characters does. Good luck finding a copy of this one. I waited until Amazon posted a 1905 printing from a secondary distributor.

I am a long time fan of Thomas Hardy's work and this did not disappoint - full of the atmosphere of the period and good characterisations.
Pleasant reading
I loved this book. I wonder where he got the name "Ethelberta" !!
A Hardy book that is easy to read where you feel good afterward difficult to believe but it happens. This one was fun
The Hand of Ethelberta is classic Hardy, a long tale filled with unanticipated weaves and turns, vivid characters, and many quotable phrases and paragraphs. Too bad it came to an end.
A lot of twists and turns as related to a young woman's affections, but overall, a good read for all ages.
Not one of Hardy's major novels but a good read nonetheless. Amusing (lots of great dialog amongst his "rustics"), ironic and just a tad cynical, Well worth your time.
