Tent of Protection Louise Silk 9781300657835 Books Reviews

Louise Silk expands the reader's consciousness by beautifully weaving two souls who are not connected by a linear sense of time but who are connected in a much deeper timeless way, soulfully and spiritually. Rachael, Leah, and their communities teach us how to see and embrace the divine in everything, no matter the external circumstances. Tent of Protection inspires its readers to see holiness in their own vocations and lives. Thank you Ms Silk!
In TENT OF PROTECTION, Louise Silk gives the reader an intimate glimpse into the lives of Rachel and Leah. These women are separated by generations and many miles but are linked by their strong Jewish faith, their passion for sewing and their extraordinarily difficult end of life situations.
Louise Silk writes a beautiful, simply told story that has a religious backdrop dotted with Hebrew references (The author provides a helpful glossary.) and a satisfying ending. Read TENT OF PROTECTION in one sitting on a quiet night.
This is a story about two women facing two very different sets of challenges and pains across a great divide of time yet who somehow resonate. The book teaches a great deal of history through story and is enlivened by the author's keen sense of detail. You can see and feel the clothing as the characters dress.
Tent of Protection is a rather brief book which conveys a long -lasting effect on the reader. Louise Silk is a textile artist who uses her skills to weave a thread connecting two Jewish women living disparate lives generations apart. One is living in the midst of the Holocaust. The other is facing a terminal illness. In the uniqueness of their individuality, these women employ their faith and working collectively with fabric to imbue themselves and those around them with the courage to face the unspeakable. I am not Jewish and needle and thread are anathema to me. However, months after reading this book, I still feel its impact. There is so much I can apply to my every day life.
I realize how to construct my own "Tent of Protection" with these principles. Other readers could undoubtedly do this as well.
This book addresses very important questions about the meaning of our lives and what sustains us through difficult times and life challenges. These are explored in the context of the lives of two artistic Jewish women, very different from each other but also interconnected.

Here we have Rachel, a woman who loves deeply. Even in the face of the Holocaust she is sustained by her unwaivering faith, her spiritual mystical practices, her commitment to helping others, her artistic creativity and devotion to all she touches. And several generations later, Leah, who- we feel- is greatly impacted - in mysterious ways - by the former woman.

I found the interweaving of themes and layers of existence pleasing the material, sensual touch- the work with fabric, strings, colors - and the spiritual practices of meditations, chanting, blessings; the Chassidic, religiously observant Rebbitzin and the contemporary, spiritually seeking and struggling artist, who discovers her strength in the face of imminent death.

As readers we feel for these women and their stories and also learn about a lost Jewish Consious Community. Louise Silk imagines and resurrects an entire life style that was mostly wiped out by the Holocaust. By doing so she honors their memory and affirms the continuity of their lives and ours.

I found that message enriching, hopeful and inspiring.
